Servant of the Lake Aldous Morning Routine — Six Gates

Wake at seven, clear every gate, and deliver Aldous to the guest carriage.

Aldous Morning Routine

After the estate setup puzzles, Servant of the Lake shifts into a structured morning routine for Aldous Vanderboom. Think of this segment as six gates you must clear in order—skip one and Aldous refuses to move on, often with minimal dialogue hinting at the missing step. This guide assumes you already reached Aldous’s room via the Demo full walkthrough; it deep-dives only the morning chain.

Before gate one: set up at 7:00

Read the note in Aldous’s room demanding a 7:00 wake time. Adjust the alarm clock and trigger the wake interaction when the clock reads seven. Until Aldous is out of bed, kitchen and wardrobe tasks may still be available in the background, but the gated sequence officially starts once he is standing and expecting service.

If you have not cooked yet, backtrack to the porridge puzzle section of the kitchen—the first gate assumes a pot exists even if berries come later.

Gate 1 — Porridge ready

Goal: Present edible porridge.

Actions: Ensure the base porridge from wood, matches, pot, milk, oats, and sugar is cooked. Aldous may initially reject it; that rejection pushes you toward the berry gate rather than meaning you failed cooking. Keep the prepared pot accessible in inventory or on the table as the routine continues.

Common block: Forgetting to light the stove or omitting sugar. Recheck the kitchen counters against the kitchen map.

Gate 2 — Shave and cleanup

Goal: Complete grooming and remove evidence.

Actions: Help Aldous into slippers, then perform the shave on his earlobe. The scene produces blood you must clean from the basin or floor before proceeding. The earlobe item becomes important for gate three—do not discard unrelated inventory during cleanup.

Tone note: This gate is deliberately uncomfortable Rusty Lake horror. Mechanically it is a two-step fetch: shave, then clean.

Gate 3 — Berries via bird and insect

Goal: Add berries to porridge.

Actions:

  1. Use the earlobe on the bird to receive a key.
  2. Unlock berry access with that key.
  3. Solve the insect berry holes placement puzzle so berries are valid for Aldous.

Full pattern detail lives on the insect and berries puzzle page. After berries succeed, return to Aldous with completed porridge—he should eat, clearing the food gate entirely.

Gate 4 — Exercise like the toy soldier

Goal: Mirror the toy soldier’s pose sequence.

Actions: Locate the toy soldier reference in or near Aldous’s room. Click Aldous’s limbs or adjacent props in the same order the soldier displays—often head, arms, legs, or a repeating march pattern. Partial sequences reset or simply fail silently until the full set registers.

Tip: If exercise will not start, confirm gates one through three are fully resolved, including blood cleanup and eaten porridge.

Gate 5 — Dress shirt, vest, and bow

Goal: Formal presentation layer by layer.

Actions: Equip shirt, then vest, then bow (bow tie) from wardrobe hotspots. Some builds require clicking Aldous after each piece; others auto-dress when items combine correctly. Verify all three layers appear in the character sprite before leaving the room.

Gate 6 — Guests and carriage arrival

Goal: End the Demo narrative beat.

Actions: Exit toward the estate front when Aldous is fed, groomed, exercised, and dressed. The guest carriage scene plays automatically once the internal checklist registers complete. This is the Demo’s closing moment—not a puzzle gate, but the payoff for clearing gates one through five.

Gate dependency chart

Understanding dependencies prevents circular backtracking:

  • Porridge (base) can be prepared before wake, but berries require shave outputs.
  • Shave must finish with blood cleaned before Aldous accepts exercise or dress commands.
  • Bird key never appears until the earlobe is fed.
  • Exercise and dress both hard-block until food and grooming gates complete.

Optional easter egg timing

The easter egg with code 728 must be done before entering Aldous’s room if you want the black bird egg without replaying the arrival section. It does not replace any morning gate but can distract first-time players—finish kitchen setup first, then detour if curious.

After the morning

The Demo ends at the carriage; there is no second day loop in the free build. Prepare for the August 13, 2026 release with the full game prep guide and read Vanderboom lore so guest identities matter when the premium story continues.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What are the six morning gates in the Demo?

Base porridge, shave and blood cleanup, berries via bird and insect, toy-soldier exercise, formal dressing, and the guest carriage finale. Wake at 7:00 happens immediately before gate one.

Why will Aldous not exercise?

Earlier gates are incomplete. Confirm porridge with berries was eaten and shaving blood was cleaned. Exercise is gate four and hard-locks until food and grooming finish.

Where do berries come from?

Feed the shaved earlobe to the bird for a key, then solve the insect berry holes puzzle. Details are on the insect and berries puzzle page.

Can I wake Aldous before 7:00?

The note specifies 7:00. Set the alarm correctly; waking early typically does not advance the routine and may waste clicks.

Is there a printable gate order?

Use the morning routine checklist tool on the wiki—it mirrors this gate order with checkboxes for porridge, shave, berries, exercise, and dress.
